Dusk Beyond the End of the World Episode 4 Impressions
Episode 4 of Dusk Beyond the End of the World leans into the double date idea, and on paper that is a fun setup. A relaxed outing can be charming and gives a show room to play, so I went in hoping it might make the leads a little easier to warm to.

The trouble, for me, is the romance at the center of it all. Akira does not have much going on beyond his love for Towasa and the fact that he is handy. Towasa, meanwhile, comes across as someone with almost no social experience, since Akira seems to be the only person her age she has ever really spoken to. Add in Yuugure, an android who looks like Towasa and wants to marry Akira, and the emotional tangle still feels hard to invest in.
A few new faces turn up during the date, though it is genuinely unclear whether they are recurring characters or just here for the week. The episode also closes on a jolt: Akira is shot again, and this time there is no convenient cryo chamber waiting to bring him back.
I would be surprised if the show actually let him go, especially in such an offhand way, so I expect Yuugure to reveal some ability or knowledge that saves him next time. The moment seems less about suspense and more about drawing a quiet parallel between Yuugure and Towasa, with Akira taking a hit for both.
What keeps pulling my attention is the world in the background. The scattered mentions of OWEL, and the question of why it wants to keep Akira away from everyone, are far more intriguing than the romance up front. The series is streaming on HIDIVE, and I think its best shot is to finally open up about what happened while Akira was asleep.
My take: I am not won over yet, but I am still a little curious. If this show commits to its mystery instead of its love triangle, I think it could turn things around.
