Top 10 Scariest Anime Villains, Ranked

Powerful villains are common. Frightening ones are rare. This list is ranked on dread, the feeling that a character could be in the room with you, rather than on raw strength. Spoilers throughout.

The rankings

1. Johan Liebert, Monster. No powers, no army, just a smile and the ability to make anyone destroy themselves. The scariest character in fiction, not only anime.
2. Makima, Chainsaw Man. Kindness as a leash. The horror is how long it takes Denji to notice.
3. Shou Tucker, Fullmetal Alchemist. One episode. Everyone knows which one.
4. Muzan Kibutsuji, Demon Slayer. A monster who looks like a family man and kills his own for a bad mood.
5. Hisoka, Hunter x Hunter. Terrifying because he is having fun.
6. The Major, Hellsing Ultimate. A man who loves war so purely that his speech about it is quoted by people who should know better.
7. Mahito, Jujutsu Kaisen. A curse born from hatred of humans, and he plays with them like clay.
8. Ryuk, Death Note. Not evil, just bored, which is worse.
9. Kyubey, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. An alien accountant who cannot understand why the girls are upset.
10. The Titans, Attack on Titan. Not a character, but the smiling Titan that ate Eren’s mother earns the slot.

The pattern

Most of these villains are calm. The truly frightening ones never raise their voice, because they do not need to.

My take: Johan is number one on every list like this and deserves it. Monster is the rare series where the villain barely appears and dominates anyway.
