Ryo Kujirakawa Launches New Manga Kyosei Kankei in November
The November issue of Akita Shoten’s Young Champion Retsu revealed on Tuesday that Ryō Kujirakawa is starting a new manga called Kyōsei Kankei, which translates roughly to Teacher Student Relationship. It begins in the next issue on November 18 and opens with a color page.
The story follows a teacher who is always short on money thanks to drinking and gambling. Through a particular turn of events, he ends up staying at the home of one of his high school students.
Kujirakawa is an experienced creator. The artist drew Reptile Secrets, which ran on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday and the Manga ONE app from 2016 until it ended in January 2024, reaching 14 collected volumes. Comikey publishes that series digitally in English.
Earlier in the artist’s career, working under the name Gujira, they also produced mature manga. One such title was picked up in English by the publisher FAKKU in 2016, a step the artist took in part as a response to widespread piracy of their work.
My take: A messy, down on his luck teacher landing in an unexpected living situation has real comedic potential. I am curious to see what tone Kujirakawa brings to this new series.
