Misato Matsuoka Plays Legendary Idol in You and Idol Precure Film
Voice actress Misato Matsuoka has been cast as a mysterious “legendary idol” in the upcoming You and Idol Precure anime film. The film, titled Eiga Kimi to Idol Precure: Omatase! Kimi ni Todokeru Kirakki Live!, premieres in Japan on September 12, 2025. Matsuoka also voices the series’ main heroine Uta Sakura, known as Cure Idol, and her new role as the unnamed legendary idol character is said to have an important part in the story.
The film revolves around the hosting of the universe’s greatest idol festival on AiAi Island, a celebration that gets thrown into chaos when mysterious monsters appear. Characters from both Wonderful Precure! and Soaring Sky! Precure will also make appearances in the film.
Three new cast additions were announced alongside Matsuoka: Maaya Uchida as Tera, Ayane Sakura as Amas, and Atsuhiro Tsuda as Totto. Returning cast members from the TV series include Minami Takahashi as Cure Wink (Nana Aokaze) and Natsumi Takamori as Cure Kyun Kyun (Kokoro Shigure).
Koji Ogawa, who directed both Precure All Star NewStage2 and Precure All Star NewStage3, is directing the film. Nishiki Itaoka, who worked on Precure All Stars F, serves as character designer and chief animation director. Hiroyuki Yoshino, known for The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe, wrote the script. Toei Animation is handling the animation production.
You and Idol Precure is the 22nd overall entry in the long-running Pretty Cure magical girl franchise. The TV series premiered in Japan in February 2025 and follows middle school student Uta Sakura, who dreams of becoming an idol and discovers she can transform into one of the legendary Precure warriors.
My take: Matsuoka playing both the main hero and a mysterious legendary idol in the same film is a fun setup, and the Precure film tradition of bringing together characters from multiple series always makes for a lively event. Looking forward to seeing how this one comes together.
