Berserk Arcs in Order: Reading Guide to the Manga
Berserk is structured in five large arcs, and the manga famously opens in the middle of the story. Here is the order, what each arc covers, and how to read it without getting lost.
Black Swordsman Arc (volumes 1 to 3)
The introduction. Guts is already the Black Swordsman, hunting apostles with the Dragonslayer and the Brand of Sacrifice. It is deliberately confusing, because Miura wanted the reader to meet the man before the boy.
Golden Age Arc (volumes 3 to 14)
The flashback that is the heart of the series: Guts joins the Band of the Hawk, Griffith’s rise, Casca, and the Eclipse. This is the material adapted by the 1997 anime and the film trilogy, and it is the reason Berserk has the reputation it does.
Conviction Arc (volumes 14 to 21)
Guts hunts Casca through a land consumed by religious terror, ending at the Tower of Conviction. Introduces Farnese, Serpico and Puck’s growing role.
Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc (volumes 22 to 35)
Griffith returns to the world, Guts gains the Berserker Armor, and the story widens into a war between kingdoms and the supernatural. Most of the modern cast arrives here.
Fantasia Arc (volumes 35 onward)
The world merges with the astral plane, Elfhelm offers Casca a chance at healing, and the story is still being told. Since Kentaro Miura’s death in 2021, the manga has continued under his assistants at Studio Gaga with Kouji Mori, Miura’s closest friend, guiding the remaining plot.
How to start
Read from volume one. The Black Swordsman arc’s confusion is intentional and pays off within two volumes.
My take: The Golden Age is the reason to read Berserk, but the Conviction Arc is where Miura became a master. Do not stop at the Eclipse.
