Ousama no Propose Light Novel Gets a TV Anime
Kadokawa has announced that the light novel Ousama no Propose, known in English as King’s Proposal, is getting a television anime. The news came on Saturday during the Fantasia Bunko Housoukyoku Aki no Dai Kanshasai livestream, along with a new illustration by Tsunako.
The series comes from the team behind Date A Live, writer Koushi Tachibana and illustrator Tsunako. Tachibana began the action fantasy light novel under Fujimi Shobo’s Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint in September 2021, and the eighth volume reached shelves on August 20.
The story has grown beyond the novels too. Nemo Kurio launched a web manga adaptation on Square Enix’s Gangan Online site in February 2023, with the sixth volume arriving on March 12.
English readers are covered as well. Yen Press licensed the light novel in April 2022, released its sixth volume on May 27, and has the seventh volume scheduled for January 6, 2026.
As for the plot, Saika Kuozaki is the most powerful mage alive and the only one able to hold back the annihilation factors that threaten the world once every three hundred hours. When she is mortally wounded, she passes her powers and her body to Mushiki Kuga, an ordinary high school boy who happens to find her. Inheriting her abilities is one thing, but controlling them is another, so Mushiki must enroll at a mage academy disguised as Saika while keeping his real identity a secret.
My take: A new project from the Date A Live duo is easy to get excited about. The body swap premise sounds like a lot of fun, and I am hopeful the anime keeps that playful spirit.
