Jujutsu Kaisen Ranks Number 2 on a US Graphic Novel Chart
Manga keeps performing strongly in the United States print market. The 27th volume of Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen landed at number two on Circana BookScan’s Top 20 adult graphic novels list for August.
It was far from alone, as manga made up 16 of the 20 spots on that month’s chart, underlining how dominant the format has become in the category.
Holding the top spot above it was the 13th volume of Chugong and DUBU’s Korean webcomic Solo Leveling, a reminder that manhwa is thriving right alongside manga.
For a bit of background, Circana BookScan tracks weekly print sales from more than 16,000 retail locations and covers roughly 85 percent of the country’s trade print book market, with its rankings based on actual copies sold.
That makes a placement this high a meaningful sign of just how well these titles are selling in everyday bookstores, not only specialty shops.
My take: When manga and manhwa fill the vast majority of a mainstream graphic novel chart, it really drives home how the medium has gone from niche to centerstage. It is a great time to be a fan.
