Fantagraphics to Publish Japanese War Brides Manga in 2026
Fantagraphics has confirmed that it will publish the first volume of Marina Lisa Komiya’s manga On Their Frontlines: The Lives of Japanese War Brides, known in Japanese as Senjō no Hito. The English edition is scheduled for August 11, 2026.
The story looks at the lives of two Japanese women in the difficult years following the Second World War, a time when the country was rebuilding and many women faced hardship and few choices. It treats themes of identity, sexuality, and cultural change with real sensitivity.
At its heart are Haru and Yoriko, close friends who are separated when their town is evacuated during the air raids. As they search for one another in the aftermath, their paths diverge, and each eventually crosses paths with a kind American soldier.
Those soldiers carry their own struggles. Arthur, a Japanese American, wrestles with his dual heritage, while Scott is drawn to Japanese culture even as he carries guilt over the destruction the war caused. Through it all, the manga finds room for understanding and connection.
The series first ran on the Torch web platform from April 2023 until it concluded on January 30, and LEED Publishing collected it into two volumes in Japan.
My take: Quieter, historically grounded works like this one deserve a wider audience, and it is heartening to see Fantagraphics bring it to English readers. It sounds like a tender, thoughtful read.
