War With No Name Sci-Fi Book Series Gets Webtoon and Animated Adaptation
Writer Curtis Baxter has acquired the rights to Robert Repino’s sci-fi book franchise The War With No Name and is developing both a webtoon and an animated series based on the property. Baxter, who has writing credits on Miles Morales: Spider-Man Annual and Cartoon Network’s Ben 10, announced the project on October 23.
The webtoon version is set to debut on the WEBTOON platform in early 2026. Its first season will run 35 episodes and cover the events of the first two books in the four book series, with Baxter serving as writer and showrunner. Alongside the webtoon, Baxter is also developing an eight episode animated television series that explores the backstories of key characters from the franchise.
The War With No Name is a darkly imaginative sci-fi story following a domestic cat named Mort(e) who is transformed into an intelligent assassin during a war between animals and humanity. The original novels were written by Repino and published starting in 2015. Baxter is part of Dan Lin’s Rideback RISE program, which supports diverse creators in the entertainment industry.
My take: A webtoon and an animated companion series launching together is a smart way to build out a franchise from the ground up. The War With No Name has a genuinely strange and compelling premise, the kind of thing that feels like it was built for serialized visual storytelling. Baxter’s background in animation gives me confidence that the adaptation will understand what makes the source material work.
