Makeine Wins Best TV Anime at the 2025 Newtype Awards
Newtype magazine revealed the winners of its 15th annual anime awards on Sunday night. Decided by fan voting and covering anime released between July 2024 and July 2025, the ceremony works much like a Japanese counterpart to the Crunchyroll Awards.
The top prize for Best TV Anime went to Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!. It edged out a strong field of finalists that included Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, Solo Leveling Season 2, and Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray.
On the film side, Bocchi the Rock! Movie took Best Anime Film, ahead of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved and Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK.
Makeine’s win is notable for another reason, since it is the first romance anime to claim Best TV Anime since Kaguya sama: Love Is War? back in 2020.
Among the other winners, Kazuhiko Nukumizu took Best Male Character, Hitori Gotō won Best Female Character, and Kazuya Tsurumaki earned Best Director. A-1 Pictures was named Best Studio, having produced both Makeine and Solo Leveling Season 2 during the eligibility window.
My take: It is lovely to see a gentle romantic comedy like Makeine take the top honor. Fan voted awards always offer a nice snapshot of what truly connected with viewers that year.
