Chainsaw Man Reze Arc Film Holds Number One as Zombie Land Saga Opens Strong
Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc held onto the number one spot at the Japanese box office in its second weekend of release. The film debuted at number one on its opening weekend and maintained that position as other new titles entered the charts.
The Zombie Land Saga film opened at number eight in its debut weekend, giving the beloved idol zombie franchise a solid theatrical start. Zombie Land Saga has maintained a passionate fanbase since its 2018 debut and the film was one of the more anticipated anime theatrical releases of the autumn season.
Chainsaw Man: The Movie Reze Arc covers the Reze Arc from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, following Denji as he encounters the mysterious Reze. MAPPA produced the film and Sony Pictures Entertainment holds worldwide theatrical rights. The film has been playing in multiple formats including MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema screenings in Japan.
My take: Two beloved series holding top ten positions in the same weekend is a good sign for anime theatrical releases as a format. Chainsaw Man holding the top spot through its second week shows real staying power, and Zombie Land Saga opening at eight with a dedicated but not mainstream fanbase is honestly an impressive result.
