K-9: Public Security Bureau Manga Comes to English
Kodansha announced on X this week that its K Manga service is now publishing Tetsuya Okuyama’s manga K-9: Public Security Bureau, Division 9 in English. New chapters will be added every Tuesday.
The series builds its world around an intriguing idea called Sin, a special ability that awakens in a person the moment they commit a crime. Detective Ren Hizuki of the Tokyo police spends her days confronting the surge in serious crime that these abilities have unleashed.
Her life changes when she is reassigned to the newly formed Public Security Bureau, Division 9, where she meets the timid Detective Yushiro Oboro. As the unlikely pair begin working special ability cases together, the division’s buried secrets, and Oboro’s true identity, slowly start to surface.
Okuyama launched the manga on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform on April 16, and now English readers can follow it as it continues.
My take: A crime thriller where breaking the law literally grants you powers is a clever, unsettling hook. The mismatched detective duo gives it heart, and I am curious what secrets Division 9 is hiding.
