Plus Sized Misadventures in Love Creator mamakari Talks Manga and the Anime Adaptation
With the anime adaptation of Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love! arriving on streaming, mangaka mamakari reflected on the story’s origins and the creative choices that shaped it. The series takes a warmer and more thoughtful approach to body image than the title might initially suggest, and the conversation with her creator reveals how deliberately that tone was constructed.
The idea for the manga grew out of mamakari’s encounter with the concept of cognitive distortions — the way our patterns of thought can shape how we perceive ourselves and the world around us — which she came across in a counseling session. She wanted to build a story around the question of whether a change in perspective could genuinely transform a person’s life. The challenge was making that idea feel like a story rather than a lesson, which led her to the device of amnesia. By giving lead character Yumeko a new personality alongside her missing memories, the transformation could feel sudden, real, and emotionally compelling rather than gradual and instructional.
Despite the series title, weight is not actually the central focus of the story. mamakari describes the real narrative threads as infidelity, amnesia, and the small misadventures that come from those two things colliding. The relationship between Yumeko and her love interest is something she thinks of as more like a cooking partnership — two people having fun together — than a conventional romance, and she made that dynamic more prominent in the manga than it was in the original light novel.
On the technical side, mamakari discussed the challenge of converting interior monologue from the light novel into a visual format appropriate for manga readers. It required finding ways to show characters’ inner states through what they do and how they look rather than through narration, which is a very different kind of storytelling problem than writing prose.
My take: The cognitive distortions angle gives Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love! a genuinely thoughtful emotional foundation that sets it apart from most romantic comedies in the genre. A story that takes its protagonist’s inner life this seriously while still being warm and fun sounds like a very worthwhile watch.
