Lazarus Is Shinichiro Watanabe’s New Original Anime and It Won Best Original at Crunchyroll 2026

Shinichiro Watanabe has made a career out of creating anime that feel like nothing else — Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, Carole and Tuesday all carry his unmistakable fingerprint. Lazarus, his newest original anime, continues that tradition and won Best Original Anime at the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Watanabe originals occupy a different creative space from adaptations, and Lazarus proves he has not lost a step.
Lazarus takes place in a near future where a pharmaceutical company releases a drug called Hapna that promises to extend human life — only to reveal that Hapna will kill everyone who took it within three years. The story follows a DEA agent hunting down the scientist responsible, who has gone into hiding. The premise sounds like a thriller but in Watanabe’s hands it becomes a meditation on what it means to live when death has a fixed date. The tonal balance between action, philosophy, and dark humor is exactly the Watanabe signature fans recognize from Bebop.
The music, as always with Watanabe’s projects, is central to the experience. The series blends genres in a way that feels both contemporary and timeless. Adult Swim co-produced the series alongside Japan, which gives it a global platform matching the international scope of its story. Best Original Anime at Crunchyroll is the first major awards recognition for Lazarus but it will not be the last.
For fans of Cowboy Bebop or Space Dandy, Lazarus is required viewing. It does not replicate what came before — it builds from it. For viewers new to Watanabe, this is an excellent entry point. The premise is immediately accessible, the style is confident, and the emotional intelligence is present from the first episode.
My take: Watanabe winning Best Original Anime with Lazarus is one of the most satisfying outcomes of the entire 2026 awards season. He is one of the few anime directors who can take any concept and make it feel vital. Lazarus feels like the work of someone who spent years thinking about what to make next and chose exactly right. Watch it.
