You and I Are Polar Opposites Anime Debuts January 11 on TV

The anime adaptation of Kōcha Agasawa’s romantic comedy manga You and I Are Polar Opposites now has an official start date. The show will debut on January 11 on MBS, TBS, and their affiliated stations, airing on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. JST. ABEMA will stream it in Japan at 5:30 p.m. on the same day. A third promotional video has been released which previews the ending theme, a song called Pure featuring Eriko Hashimoto, performed by PAS TASTA.

The story follows Suzuki, an energetic girl who tends to go along with whatever everyone else is doing, as she grows closer to Tani, a quiet classmate who has no trouble saying exactly what he thinks. The manga ran on Shonen Jump+ from May 2022 through November 2024, and it began as a one shot on the same platform back in January 2021. The series has over 1.6 million copies in circulation. Viz Media publishes it in English. The manga also earned recognition in the Manga Taisho Awards, reaching the top three in 2023 and placing seventh in 2024.

Takakazu Nagatomo is directing the anime at Lapin Track. Teruko Utsumi, whose credits include Sarazanmai, is writing the scripts and also serving as animation producer. Character design is handled by Mako Miyako, and tofubeats is composing the music. The full eight collected volumes are out now.

My take: You and I Are Polar Opposites is exactly the kind of grounded, gentle romance that tends to land quietly and then stick with you. The creative team looks genuinely thoughtful, and having tofubeats on music is an interesting choice that I think could give the show a distinctive feel.
