Cat Folktales Web Anime Adds Two More Guest Voice Actors
Kadokawa announced on Wednesday that two more guests are joining the cast of Ugoku! Neko Mukashi Banashi, the web anime based on Pandania’s four panel manga Cat Folktales. The comedy duo Long Coat Daddy, made up of Tōru Dōmae and Usagi and both self professed cat lovers, will appear in guest roles.
They join previously announced guests, including Snow Man idol Daisuke Sakuma and Yūjirō Shirakawa of the group Junretsu. The anime debuts on October 15 on YouTube, with new episodes streaming every Wednesday.
To mark the launch, the giant curved Cross Shinjuku Vision screen near Tokyo’s Shinjuku station, famous for its lifelike 3D illusions, began showing promotional footage from the anime for a week.
The series comes from Studio Comet, with Kazumi Nonaka directing. Its premise is delightfully simple: it takes children’s stories and folktales from around the world and asks what would happen if a cat wandered into them.
The manga has reached three volumes so far, with a fourth on the way, and Seven Seas Entertainment is releasing the series in English. Pandania is also known for many other cat manga, such as Cats With Jobs and The Evil Secret Society of Cats.
My take: A series whose whole concept is dropping cats into famous folktales is irresistibly charming. Pairing it with real cat loving comedians as guests is the kind of cute, low stakes fun I am always up for.
