Tokyo Ghoul Kagune Types Explained: Ukaku to Rinkaku
Tokyo Ghoul built its combat system on a beautifully simple idea: every ghoul carries a predatory organ called a kagune, and its type decides how they fight. Here is the full breakdown.
The four types
Ukaku kagune bloom from the shoulders like wings, trading stamina for overwhelming speed and ranged shard attacks. Koukaku emerge below the shoulder blade as dense armor and blades, the defensive specialists. Rinkaku take the form of scaled tentacles from the back, offering brutal offense and unmatched regeneration at the cost of fragile structure. Bikaku extend from the tailbone as balanced, whiplike weapons with no glaring weakness.
The types form a loose combat triangle: ukaku beats bikaku, bikaku beats rinkaku, rinkaku beats koukaku, and koukaku beats ukaku. Ken Kaneki inherited Rize’s rinkaku, which is why his regeneration borders on unfair and why his fighting style grows so monstrous as the series darkens.

My take: The kagune triangle is one of the smartest power systems of its era because it keeps fights about matchups and wits rather than raw strength. Modern shonen could steal that lesson more often.
