The Teen Exorcist Manga Reaches Its Final Chapter
The November issue of Kadokawa’s Young Ace magazine published the final chapter of Shikiji Sorakura’s manga The Teen Exorcist, an adaptation of Mitsuru Yūki’s long running light novel series Shōnen Onmyōji. The magazine also revealed that a spinoff story will appear in its next issue, and the sixth and final volume is due on December 4.
English readers can follow along too, as Yen Press licensed the manga and recently released its third volume.
The story is set in Japan’s Heian period and follows Masahiro, a young royal diviner and the grandson of the legendary Abe no Seimei. Rather than simply follow in his famous grandfather’s footsteps, Masahiro dreams of surpassing him.
During training with his spirit companion Mokkun, he senses a dark presence threatening the princess, and must protect the capital while stepping out of his grandfather’s long shadow.
The original novels date all the way back to 2001 and have a rich history, having already inspired an anime in 2006 and even a stage musical.
My take: A young diviner trying to live up to a legendary name is a timeless, appealing setup. It is nice that a spinoff is following the finale, giving fans of this Heian fantasy a little more to enjoy.
