Zelda Manga Duo Akira Himekawa Spotlight Kamudo at NYCC
Viz Media confirmed on Thursday that the celebrated manga duo Akira Himekawa are appearing at this year’s New York Comic Con. Best known for their manga adaptations of The Legend of Zelda, the pair have several autograph signings lined up, along with a spot on Viz’s panel on Sunday afternoon.
The focus of that panel is their original series Kamudo, which Viz is now releasing in English both digitally, as a simultaneous release, and in print.
The story is an ambitious fantasy. Long before humans rose to prominence, the skybound paradise of Hinoaruchi was home to demi beings, creatures that were part human and part beast. A fragile peace held by the demi dragons of Ryujinkyo begins to waver when a prophecy foretells a new and uncertain age, leaving the fate of the world hanging between disaster and salvation.
Kamudo began on Shogakukan’s Sunday Webry service in October 2024, and its first collected volume has just arrived. Himekawa first teased the project years ago, describing it as a return to their roots and to fantasy drawn from Asian history and mythology.
The duo’s long resume includes many beloved Zelda adaptations, most notably Twilight Princess.
My take: After so many wonderful Zelda manga, it is exciting to see Himekawa pour that talent into an original world of their own. A sky bound realm of dragons and prophecy sounds right up their alley.
