Duolingo Launches an Anime Series on YouTube
Ever wondered what the Duolingo owl gets up to outside the language app? It turns out acting may be a calling, because Duolingo is launching its own short form anime series.
The series gives a fresh backstory for Duo, the company’s familiar green owl mascot, and his friends. Titled The Final Test, it runs as five episodes of about 60 seconds each, all arriving on Duolingo’s YouTube channel on Monday, October 13.
The timing is no accident, as the anime lines up with the launch of updated Japanese courses on the app. Fittingly, all of the voice acting is in Japanese.
To make it accessible worldwide, the series offers subtitles in a wide range of languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Korean, and Thai, alongside Japanese.
It is a playful bit of marketing that turns a beloved app mascot into the star of his own little anime.
My take: Brands leaning into anime can feel gimmicky, but a tiny series built around the famously persistent Duo owl is honestly charming. Tying it to new Japanese lessons is a clever, lighthearted touch.
