Media Blasters Plans to Release the Garo Live Action Films
Media Blasters announced on X this past Friday that it plans to release the Garo live action franchise in the future. The rollout is set to begin with the films Kiba Gaiden, Garo: Taiga, Garo: Red Requiem, Garo and the Wailing Dragon, and Garo: Under the Moon.
For the uninitiated, Garo is a long running dark fantasy franchise. Its stories follow Makai Knights, special humans tasked with battling demonic beings known as Horrors.
The original 25 episode television series, which aired in 2005, centered on the Makai Knight Kōga Saejima as he tried to save a young woman named Kaoru from a deadly fate after she was tainted by demon blood.
The franchise has stayed remarkably active over the years. Its official site announced a 20th Anniversary Project earlier this year, which includes the Garo: Taiga film, and a recent television series aired in early 2024.
Garo has reached anime fans too, through series like Garo the Animation and Garo: Vanishing Line, along with a couple of anime films, several of which streamed on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
My take: Garo is a stylish, underappreciated corner of tokusatsu, so it is great to see more of the live action films becoming available. Longtime fans and curious newcomers alike should be glad to have easier access.
