Kaiju No. 8 Studio’s Underrated Adult Anime Is Losing Its Streaming Home After 7 Years
Production I.G’s 2018 hit anime Run with the Wind is about to lose the only major streaming home in the U.S. that it has had for nearly a decade.
Per an official update from anime streaming service HIDIVE, Run with the Wind (or Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru) will officially be making its exit from the platform in just one day. Currently, Run with the Wind is set to leave HIDIVE on Nov. 2, leaving fans with little time to catch up on the series before it’s gone.
Production I.G’s Run with the Wind Loses Anime Streaming Home on HIDIVE
Based on Shion Miura’s 2006 novel of the same name, which in turn spawned both a manga and live-action feature film adaptation, Run with the Wind was produced by Production I.G. and released in 2018 to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The series follows Kakeru, an elite track athlete and high school student who is nearly caught stealing food, only to be rescued by a fellow runner and student named Haiji. Eventually, Kakeru finds a home with Haiji and a group of other prospective marathon runners, the rest of whom are complete novices in their craft.
The Run with the Wind anime series ran for a total of 23 episodes across a single season, yet despite its relatively short length, the show managed to leave a major impact on both viewers and critics. As of the time of writing, Run with the Wind holds a stellar 8.3/10 score via the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), as averaged across more than 2,200 reviews. For comparison, the 2009 live-action adaptation, Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru, only holds a 6.5/10 rating, as averaged across 115 reviews of the film.
The latest ongoing anime from Production I.G, Kaiju No. 8, has proven to be an even bigger hit than Run with the Wind, although that is hardly a surprise considering the overwhelming popularity of the original manga by Naoya Matsumoto and its numerous follow-up series. The anime premiered in 2024 and immediately cemented its place as the then-latest hit kaiju-centric series. Kaiju No. 8 is set in a world where towering monsters regularly cause devastating disasters, leading to the creation of the Japanese Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, who utilize suits crafted from the remains of felled kaiju in their ongoing war for the future of their world. So far, Kaiju No. 8 has run for a total of 23 episodes across two seasons, as well as a single television special.
Currently, fans are awaiting an update regarding the development and production of a third season of Kaiju No. 8, which would presumably follow the story set forth by the original manga and close out the overarching narrative at hand.
Run with the Wind will be leaving HIDIVE on Nov. 2. The same anime studio’s Kaiju No. 8 is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
