Dragon Quest I and II HD 2D Remakes Launch October 30

Square Enix shared a fresh trailer on Friday for its HD 2D remakes of Dragon Quest I and II. The video shows off the extra content coming to the pair, including new dungeons, sigils, scrolls, mini medals, an ocean floor to explore, and a feature called the memories of the world.

The two game collection arrives on October 30 for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC through Steam and Windows. Preorders are open now, and a limited collector’s edition is available only through the Square Enix store. Alongside a physical copy, it bundles in character and monster acrylic blocks, an Outstanding Outfit kit, two digital wallpapers, and another preorder bonus.

There is a nice reward for returning players too. Anyone with save data from last year’s HD 2D remake of Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation will receive a dog suit in the first game and a cat suit in the second. That earlier remake launched back in November 2024.

The HD 2D look blends classic sprite style characters with 3D backgrounds and lively lighting, much like Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler. The first three Dragon Quest games have a long history of rereleases, having appeared on everything from the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color to the Wii, smartphones, the 3DS, the PS4, and eventually the Switch.

Square Enix is not stopping here either. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a remake of the 2000 release Fragments of the Forgotten Past, is due on February 5 for Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC.

My take: The HD 2D style has been a gorgeous way to bring these old classics back, and tossing in a dog suit for loyal players is the kind of small touch I adore. It is a good time to be a Dragon Quest fan.
