Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian and Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro are two examples of the “enemies to lovers” romance sub-genre that is extremely popular in anime. The former series revolves around main protagonist Masachika Kuse and his beautiful yet seemingly stoic classmate Alya, a half-Russian, half-Japanese transfer student. While Alya often speaks harshly to Kuse in Japanese, she reveals her true affections for him in her native tongue. Unbeknownst to her, Kuse, who studied Russian as a child, can understand what she says. In the latter series, an introverted high school student named Naoto Hachiouji endures constant teasing from his underclassmen, Hayase Nagatoro, giving him reason to believe that she secretly harbors a crush on him.
The isekai genre features countless variations of an average or down-on-their-luck protagonist getting transported to an alternate universe. Here, they are typically given unusual powers or abilities to use however they wish. A somewhat satirical take on the sub-genre, KONOSUBA: God’s Blessings on This Wonderful World follows Kazuma Sato — a video-game-obsessed shut-in — as he dies and is suddenly reborn into a fantasy world under the brutal rule of a ruthless demon king. With the help of a goddess named Aqua, Sato embarks on a journey to defeat the demon king and restore happiness and peace to his new world.
Traditional fantasy, science-fiction and even historical fiction are also represented in Crunchyroll’s YouTube lineup. Produced by Wit Studio (Spy x Family) and MAPPA (Lazarus), Vinland Saga is a historical epic inspired by the Viking groups of Nordic folklore. The series revolves primarily around Thorfinn, an Icelandic warrior who wishes to live up to the legacy of his father, Thors. However, when a mercenary leader named Askeladd strikes Thors down, Thorfinn embarks on a bloody quest for revenge, which ultimately gets him involved in a larger European conflict abroad. In contrast, LIDEN FILMS’ Tokyo Revengers is a science-fiction anime set in modern-day Japan. Bereft after his girlfriend Hinata is killed by a notorious yakuza group, main protagonist Takemichi Hanagaki is mysteriously transported back in time, giving him a chance to infiltrate the gang and save Hinata’s life.
The aforementioned anime works are all available in their entirety on Crunchyroll’s main website for subscription costs starting at US$7.99 per month.
