Attack on Titan: All Nine Titans Explained
All nine titans in Attack on Titan are the Founding, Attack, Colossal, Armored, Female, Beast, Jaw, Cart and War Hammer. Each one is a fragment of Ymir Fritz, the first titan, and each carries its own power, its own size and its own tragic list of holders. This guide breaks down every one of them, who held them, and why they mattered to the story.

| Armored | 15m | Reiner Braun | Hardened plate armor |
| Female | 14m | Annie Leonhart | Versatility, hardening, calling pure titans |
| Beast | 17m | Zeke Yeager | Devastating throws, animal traits |

Why nine? When Ymir Fritz died, her soul was split into nine pieces, and each piece became one of these titans. That is also why no holder escapes the curse of Ymir: thirteen years after inheriting a titan, the holder dies, because Ymir herself only lived thirteen years after gaining her power. Every shifter in the story is on a clock, and once you know that, half their decisions suddenly make sense.
Founding Titan: the power everyone is fighting over
Height: 13 meters in its normal form. Holders in order: Karl Fritz’s royal line for generations, then Frieda Reiss, then Grisha Yeager, then Eren.
The Founding Titan is the reason the story exists. Its scream can command every pure titan at once, rewrite the memories of most Eldians, and even alter their bodies. It is less a weapon and more a government. The catch is that its full power only answers to royal blood, which is why Eren spends whole seasons maneuvering to touch a royal, and why Zeke’s plan hinges on being the royal half of the pair. In the finale, Eren’s Founding form grows into something enormous and skeletal, dragging the parade of past titans behind it. It is the least fun titan to watch fight and the most important one on the board.
Attack Titan: the one that refuses to kneel
Height: 15 meters. Holders: Eren Kruger, then Grisha Yeager, then Eren.
Here is the detail many viewers miss: the Attack Titan’s true power is not strength, it is time. Its holders can receive memories from future holders, which means the Attack Titan effectively remembers forward. Kruger says things he could not possibly know. Grisha obeys a son who has not been born yet. Eren’s whole endgame is built on this loop. Isayama hid a time travel story inside a monster story, and he did it in plain sight, in the name of the titan itself. It has always moved ahead, seeking freedom, no matter which era its holder lived in.
Colossal Titan: the walking bomb
Height: 60 meters. Holders: Bertolt Hoover, then Armin Arlert.
The Colossal is the image everyone knows, the face over the wall from episode one. Its transformation releases a blast comparable to a small nuclear explosion, which is exactly how Armin uses it against the Marleyan navy. It can also vent scalding steam to keep attackers away, burning through its own flesh as fuel. It is slow and clumsy, and it does not matter, because its existence alone is a threat that shapes entire wars. Giving this power to the gentlest thinker in the cast was one of the show’s cruelest and smartest choices.
Armored Titan: the shield that cracked
Height: 15 meters. Holder: Reiner Braun.
Reiner’s titan is covered in hardened plates that shrug off cannon fire and blades. It is built to break through defenses, which is exactly what it did to Wall Maria’s gate. The armor has weak points behind the knees and, more importantly, an exhausted man inside it. The Armored Titan barely loses a fight it is fully committed to, but Reiner is never fully committed to anything after Shiganshina, and the series slowly turns his unbreakable shield into a portrait of guilt. He survives everything except himself.
Female Titan: the all rounder
Height: 14 meters. Holder: Annie Leonhart.
The Female Titan is the jack of all trades. Selective hardening, high mobility, learned fighting technique, and a scream that draws pure titans to her position, which she uses to erase her pursuers in the Forest of Giant Trees. Annie’s fighting style comes from her human training, and it shows: no other titan fights with that kind of technique. She then spends four years sealed in crystal, which tells you how good the hardening is. Pound for pound, this is the best duelist among the nine.
Beast Titan: the pitcher from hell
Height: 17 meters. Holders: Tom Ksaver, then Zeke Yeager.
The Beast Titan looks different for every holder, taking on animal features. Zeke’s ape form comes with a talent that sounds silly and plays out terrifying: throwing. Crushed stones leave his hand like grapeshot and delete entire scouting formations from a kilometer away. The night raid at Shiganshina, where Erwin leads the recruits into that barrage, is arguably the darkest scene in the series. Zeke also carries royal blood, so his spinal fluid can turn Eldians into pure titans that obey his scream. The Beast is not the strongest titan in a fair fight. Zeke simply never offers one.
Jaw Titan: small, fast, lethal
Height: around 5 meters. Holders: Marcel Galliard, then Ymir, then Porco Galliard, then Falco Grice.
The Jaw is the sports car of the nine. Its bite and claws can crush what nothing else can, including the crystal around the War Hammer’s true body, which is exactly how Eren uses Porco mid battle. It changed hands more than any other titan in the story, and every handover hurt: Marcel eaten on day one of the mission, Ymir choosing to die for Historia, Porco opening his own nape for Falco. By the finale, Falco’s Jaw grows bird features and learns to glide. A flying titan arriving in the last hour of the war is peak Attack on Titan timing.
Cart Titan: the quiet workhorse
Height: 4 meters. Holder: Pieck Finger.
The Cart runs on four legs, keeps its holder transformed for months at a time, and hauls equipment like the panzer gun turret her unit bolts onto her back. Pieck’s endurance makes her Marley’s logistics, artillery platform and spy platform in one. The tradeoff is thin armor and slow regeneration, so she fights carefully and survives on brains. The Cart never gets a hype moment of its own, and it does not need one. Wars are won by supply lines, and Pieck is the supply line.
War Hammer Titan: the arsenal
Height: 15 meters. Holders: the Tybur family, most recently Lara Tybur, then Eren.
The War Hammer creates weapons out of hardened titan flesh: hammers, spikes, bows, whatever the fight calls for. Its second trick is stranger. The holder does not sit in the nape at all, but hides in a crystal connected to the titan by a cable of flesh, operating it from a distance. That is why Eren cannot simply cut Lara Tybur out, and why he feeds the crystal to Porco’s Jaw instead, swallowing the fragments and taking the power for himself. One titan held for a single night, and it still changed the balance of the entire war.
Questions fans keep asking
Why do titan shifters only live thirteen years?
Because of the curse of Ymir. Ymir Fritz lived exactly thirteen years after gaining the power of the titans, and no inheritor can outlive their source. The countdown starts at inheritance, which is why warriors are chosen young and why veterans like Ksaver hand their titan down on schedule.
Which of the Nine Titans is the strongest?
On paper, the Founding, and it is not close, since it commands every other titan in existence. In an actual brawl between the rest, the honest answer is the Beast under Zeke, because his throwing range ends fights before they begin. The Female is the best pure fighter, and the Colossal is the biggest single blast. Strongest depends entirely on the arena.
Do the Nine Titans still exist after the ending?
No. When Eren dies and Ymir’s hold on the world ends, the power of the titans disappears entirely. Every shifter still alive, including Reiner, Annie, Pieck and Falco, returns to being fully human, freed from the thirteen year curse. The nine fragments of Ymir’s soul go with her.

My take: The Cart Titan is secretly the most terrifying one. Every other titan is a weapon you point at something. Pieck’s titan is infrastructure, and infrastructure is what actually wins wars. Logistics beats heroics, in Paradis and everywhere else.
