Suehiro Maruo Launches New Manga Murder No. 28
The November issue of Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Beam revealed on Friday that veteran artist Suehiro Maruo will begin a new manga titled Satsujin 28-gou, or Murder No. 28, in the magazine’s next issue on November 12.
The story follows a young man whose father is a famous freak show performer. From within a grim, prison like hospital, he looks back and recounts the tragic course of his life.
Maruo is a celebrated and provocative name in alternative manga, known for striking works like Mr. Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show and The Strange Tale of Panorama Island.
His recent series An Gura, whose title is short for underground, also ran in Monthly Comic Beam, beginning in late 2021 and wrapping up in 2023 after a brief pause.
English readers have had a chance to discover more of his work too, as the publisher Bubbles Zine began releasing his 1982 title Beautiful Monster earlier this year.
My take: Maruo is a singular, fearless artist, so a new work from him is always an event for fans of darker, more literary manga. This one sounds suitably haunting, and I am curious to see where it goes.
