Dokodemo Makibao Spinoff Anime Gets a Second Season
Good news for fans of plucky little racehorses. The web anime brand Sukima no Anime announced on Tuesday that Dokodemo Makibao, meaning Makibao Everywhere, is getting a second season. The short spinoff of the Midori no Makibao franchise returns on Wednesday, October 8.
A promotional video for the new run, subtitled World tour, lays out the returning and incoming cast and staff.
The headline addition is Ikue Ōtani, who joins to reprise her role as Makibao’s younger sister Makibako from the original 1996 television anime. Inuko Inuyama, Shigeru Chiba, Toshiharu Sakurai, and FROGMAN all return from the first season, with FROGMAN once again directing alongside Tsukasa Nishiyama and overseeing the script at DLE in partnership with KDDI. Naotoshi Nakajima and Yuh Ochiai are writing the scripts.
New episodes will stream on YouTube, X, TikTok, and Instagram every Wednesday at 7:00 a.m. JST, which is Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. EDT. This time the story sends Makibao and his friends on training adventures across the globe as they prepare to take on their arch rival Cascade, with wonderfully silly events like a beer carrying race in Germany, a rodeo in America, and a “big battle with aliens” in Antarctica.
For a little background, the first season began on December 16 and ran through a 24th episode that arrived on March 13. It launched as part of the Sukima no Anime brand’s second wave, alongside another shorts series, Alps no Rōjin Heidi no Ojii san. The whole thing traces back to Tsunomaru’s manga, which ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1994 to 1998.
My take: A globe trotting season that pits a tiny horse against aliens in Antarctica is exactly the kind of cheerful nonsense I want from a short anime, and bringing Ikue Ōtani back is a lovely touch.
