Pass the Monster Meat Milady Creator and Voice Actress on Food and Their Characters
Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! is a fantasy series that is as much about the joy of strange cooking as it is about romance, and talking to the people behind it makes clear that spirit runs all the way through the production. Manga creator Chika Mizube and Melphiera voice actress Kanna Nakamura both bring a genuine enthusiasm for the series that comes through in everything they discuss.
Mizube describes adapting the original light novel into manga as a challenge of translation — taking passages written as interior monologue and converting them into something visual and immediately readable for manga’s audience. The process required thinking carefully about how to express a character’s inner state through expression and action rather than narration. Beyond that technical work, she also leaned into the relationship between the two main characters more than the source material does, though she is careful to describe them as cooking partners rather than a classic romantic couple. The feeling she wanted was of two companions sharing something fun together.
Nakamura, for her part, specifically sought the role of Melphiera at the audition. It was the character she had her eye on from the start, and landing the part was a meaningful moment for her. She describes Melphiera’s energy as distinct and memorable, qualities she worked to bring forward throughout the recording process.
Both creator and voice actress were also happy to play along with the show’s food-forward spirit. When asked about their strangest culinary experiences, Mizube recalled a kebab she would happily eat again, while Nakamura had a less fondly remembered encounter with a very greasy grilled frog that she has no plans to revisit.
My take: There is something genuinely charming about a series where the creative team is this obviously having fun with their own material. Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! sounds like the kind of show that rewards viewers who meet it at its own enthusiastic energy level.
