Magic Knight Rayearth Premieres Today After 30 Years
Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are back. The new Magic Knight Rayearth anime premieres today, October 7, on Crunchyroll, with English, German, French, Spanish and Italian dubs available at launch. E&H Production animates the return of CLAMP’s beloved fantasy.
The story, thirty years later
Three girls on a school field trip to Tokyo Tower are pulled into the world of Cephiro when Princess Emeraude, the Pillar who holds the world together, calls for the Magic Knights to save her. The knights, of course, turn out to be them. The original 1994 series became a gateway for a generation of fans, mixing magical girl sincerity with giant mecha and one of the most famous endings in the genre.
The question everyone has asked since the remake was announced is whether it will keep that ending intact. The trailers have been careful not to answer, which is either restraint or a warning. Either way, tonight’s premiere is the first real evidence of what this version intends to be.
A season of revivals
Rayearth joins Ghost in the Shell, Yaiba and Katekyo Hitman Reborn in 2026’s wave of classic revivals, and it is the one with the most emotional weight riding on it. The premiere date comes from Crunchyroll’s schedule as reported by Animation World Network.
My take: If the remake flinches at the ending, it fails. If it commits, it could introduce CLAMP to a whole new generation. Tonight tells us which.
