Witch on the Holy Night Final Trailer Drops Today
Five years after it was announced, ufotable’s Witch on the Holy Night movie gets its final trailer today. A special livestream at 7:00 pm JST on September 30 will show the 90 second final trailer plus “new information,” which almost certainly means the staff and music the production has kept quiet for the entire run up. The film opens in Japan on November 20, 2026 and worldwide from late January. Here is the release table for every region, what the film is, how it connects to Tsukihime and Fate, the five year production timeline, and what we still do not know two months out.

What the September 30 program is
The program was announced on September 19 at the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair stage, where Yusuke Kobayashi and Kana Hanazawa appeared and a short preview clip featuring Aoko was shown. The official account has promised a final 90 second trailer and new information. Runtime, director, screenwriter, composer and theme song artist have all been unannounced for the whole campaign, which is unusual this close to release, so expect at least some of those tonight.
The story and the TYPE MOON connection
It is the late 1980s in Misaki Town, the earliest point on the TYPE MOON timeline. Rumor says two witches live in the mansion on the hill. Aoko Aozaki is a high school student and student council president who is also the reluctant heir to a line of mages, still an apprentice. Alice Kuonji is a born witch from England who lives in the manor. Soujyuro Sizuki is a transfer student from the countryside who sees something he should not have. The threats come from Aoko’s older sister Touko and a werewolf spirit named Lugh Beowulf.
If those names ring a bell, that is the point. Aoko later becomes Shiki Tohno’s mentor in Tsukihime. Touko employs Shiki Ryougi in The Garden of Sinners. Kinoko Nasu wrote the original novel in 1996, before TYPE MOON existed, and it is the foundation everything else, including Fate, was built on.

Cast and what we know about the production
The three leads return from the 2022 game remaster: Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko, Kana Hanazawa as Alice, and Yusuke Kobayashi as Soujyuro. Supporting roles from the game, including Ruriko Aoki as Touko and Atsumi Tanezaki as Lugh Beowulf, have not been confirmed for the film. ufotable animates, the same studio behind Demon Slayer, Fate/Zero and the Heaven’s Feel trilogy, and this is the first TYPE MOON theatrical project from the studio since Heaven’s Feel III in 2020. Hirokazu Koyama did the original character designs. Beyond that, the production has not named its director.

The game behind it
The visual novel released on PC in April 2012 and got a fully voiced HD remaster from Aniplex on PS4 and Switch in December 2022, with Steam following a year later. The console versions have sold over 150,000 copies worldwide and hold a Metacritic score in the low 80s. A three volume novelization written by Nasu himself is rolling out through November.

My take: A film two months from release with no announced director is not normal, and I do not think it is an accident. ufotable has spent the last five years as the Demon Slayer studio, and Witch on the Holy Night was announced right in the middle of that. My read is that this movie has been made in the gaps between Infinity Castle films by whichever core team was free, and the studio would rather reveal the names in a controlled event than let people do the maths on who was busy when. That is fine if the film is good, and there is a real reason to think it will be: the source is short. Mahoyo is a 12 chapter kinetic novel with no branching routes, which is a gift to a screenwriter compared to the three route monster that Fate was. One film is the right shape for this story, and if they announce a two part split tonight I will be worried, because it means they are padding. The other thing I want from the program is a theme song. Aniplex sold Heaven’s Feel on Aimer and Demon Slayer on LiSA, and a TYPE MOON film with no announced singer eight weeks out means either they are holding a big name or they do not have one. Prediction: the director is a ufotable veteran we already know from Fate, the composer is Yuki Kajiura or someone close to her, the film is beautiful and quiet and confuses people expecting Fate scale action, and it does modest box office in Japan and very well with the overseas TYPE MOON crowd in January.
