Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition Moves to Weekly Shonen Champion
The November issue of Akita Shoten’s Bessatsu Shōnen Champion announced on Friday that the spinoff manga Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition is changing homes. Drawn by hiroja, it will move its serialization to Weekly Shōnen Champion, starting in the combined second and third issue of 2026, which ships on December 11.
The series is a fun alternate take on Osamu Nishi’s hit Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, and Kodansha USA released its first English volume in August.
This version reimagines Iruma as a dirt poor but always cheerful boy growing up in a harsh city slum. After he nurses an ailing stranger back to health, the man turns out to be Don Sullivan, head of the Babyl Mafia.
Soon Don Sullivan returns and sweeps Iruma away, begging the boy to become his grandson. Just like that, Iruma finds himself the unlikely heir to a sprawling gang of demonic mafiosos.
The spinoff first began in Bessatsu Shōnen Champion in 2023 and recently reached its sixth volume, one of several spinoffs the popular franchise has produced over the years.
My take: Recasting Iruma’s sweet, accidental rise to power as a mafia story is a wonderfully fun what if. Moving to a weekly magazine should give the series an even bigger stage, which it clearly deserves.
