Top 10 Anime Sidekicks Who Steal the Show
The hero gets the poster. The sidekick gets the fans. These ten are ranked on how often they steal a scene from the lead and how much the series would lose without them.
The rankings
- Killua Zoldyck, Hunter x Hunter. A sidekick in name only, and the character most viewers end up caring about more than Gon.
- Power, Chainsaw Man. A liar, a coward, a menace, and the emotional core of Part 1’s ending.
- Pochita, Chainsaw Man. A chainsaw dog who becomes a heart. The series’ purest relationship.
- Zenitsu Agatsuma, Demon Slayer. Screams for six episodes, then Thunder Breathing, and everyone forgives him.
- Kurama, Naruto. The fox that hated him for four hundred episodes and then chose him.
- Bond Forger, Spy x Family. A dog that sees the future and uses it to protect a six year old. Perfect.
- Happy, Fairy Tail. Aye, sir. Twenty years of comic timing.
- Reigen Arataka, Mob Psycho 100. Sidekick or mentor depending on the episode, and the best comedic performance in the medium.
- Megumin, Konosuba. One spell a day, and she makes it count.
- Tony Tony Chopper, One Piece. A reindeer doctor who cries at everything, and the crew’s heart.
The secret
Every great sidekick is allowed to be wrong, funny and afraid in ways the hero is not. That freedom is why they end up more human.
My take: Killua at number one is barely a sidekick and completely a sidekick. Hunter x Hunter is his story wearing Gon’s name.
