The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru Manga Ends in December
Amazon Japan has listed the thirteenth volume of Satoshi Shiki’s The Legend of Dororo and Hyakkimaru as the series’ final volume. The remake of Osamu Tezuka’s classic Dororo will wrap up with that release on December 19.
Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the series in English, with its eleventh volume due next spring.
The story unfolds during Japan’s turbulent Sengoku era, where a man trades his newborn son to a pack of devils in exchange for power. Forty eight devils claim forty eight pieces of the boy, Hyakkimaru, who is left for dead.
Saved by a kindly sage and fitted with inventive prosthetics, Hyakkimaru survives, and once grown he sets out with the young thief Dororo to slay the demons one by one and reclaim the stolen pieces of his body.
Shiki began this gorgeous retelling of Tezuka’s tale in 2018, and the busy artist has several other projects on the go, including a recent adaptation of Casshern.
My take: Tezuka’s Dororo is a timeless story, and Shiki’s striking art has been a worthy home for it. Reaching a planned thirteen volume conclusion feels like a fittingly complete way to honor the original.
