One Punch Man Season 3 Premiere Review: A Rocky Return
One Punch Man has returned for a third season, though it is fair to say the premiere arrives without much of the excitement that once surrounded the series. After a long gap and a bumpy history, expectations going in were noticeably muted.
It helps to remember how high the bar was set. The first season, directed by Shingo Natsume at Madhouse, turned ONE’s charming webcomic into a genuine animation spectacle that still stands alone. That kind of lightning in a bottle proved hard to recapture once the second season changed studios and directors, and some of that wariness carries into this new run, which arrives six years later with yet another director at J.C. Staff.
For newcomers, the premise remains as fun as ever. Saitama became a hero just for fun and trained himself into being so absurdly strong that he defeats nearly any foe in a single punch. Alongside his disciple Genos, he works under the Hero Association.
This season digs into a bigger conflict. The Monster Association takes a Hero Association executive’s child hostage, prompting the S class heroes to plan a rescue raid, while the human monster Garou awakens inside the enemy’s hideout.
Unfortunately, the opening episode leans heavy on setup and dialogue without delivering much of the punch the series is known for, which makes for a slow reintroduction. One Punch Man Season 3 is streaming on Crunchyroll, Disney+, and Hulu.
My take: I really wanted this comeback to recapture that early magic, and the muted premiere left me cautious. I am still hoping the season finds its footing once the action truly kicks in.
