Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake Adds Power Up Kit
Strategy fans have a date to circle. Koei Tecmo announced on Wednesday that Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake with Power Up Kit will arrive on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC via Steam on January 29, and the studio rolled out a promotional video to mark the news.
This new edition layers in several fresh systems, including a jewel enhancement system, five new scenarios, new “genius” characters, interface improvements, and Chinese voice support. If you already own the base remake, the Power Up Kit can also be bought on its own.
For context, Koei Tecmo released the original Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake back in October 2024, after first announcing it in September 2023 and later pushing the date back.
The roots of the series run deep. The original game launched on PC in Japan in 2001, then reached the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable, and arrived in North America in 2003. An expanded version, Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII with Power Up Kit, followed, and the 2024 remake was built on that edition, adding features like “All Officers Play” and “All Periods Scenarios.”
That remake brought real upgrades, with sharper visuals, a completely redesigned hex grid map, and combat that now factors in weather, terrain, and visibility. The most recent mainline entry, Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV, launched on PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam in North America in February 2020.
My take: Selling the Power Up Kit on its own is a thoughtful move for players who already bought the remake, and the deeper systems sound like exactly what this kind of grand strategy game thrives on.
