Re:Zero Casts Daisuke Ono as the Divine Dragon Volcanica
Four seasons and 83 episodes in, Re:Zero has finally put the Divine Dragon on screen. The official account confirmed that Daisuke Ono, the voice of Jotaro Kujo and Sebastian Michaelis, plays Volcanica, the legendary dragon whose 400 year old pact with the Kingdom of Lugunica is the reason the Royal Selection exists at all. Volcanica appeared at the very end of Season 4 Episode 17, “Good Loser,” which aired September 16. Here is who Volcanica is, why the casting matters, what the last two episodes did, and where Season 4 goes from here.

Who is Volcanica in Re:Zero?
The official character page describes Volcanica as the Divine Dragon who formed a covenant with the King of Lugunica 400 years ago, one of the Three Great Heroes who saved the world alongside the Sword Saint and the Sage, a being of immense power who keeps the world in balance and is revered as the kingdom’s guardian. The catch: its true nature is “shrouded in mystery,” which is Re:Zero’s way of saying you should not trust the legend.
Everything in the show’s politics runs through this dragon. The royal family died out, the covenant needs renewing, and the only way to renew it is to crown a new ruler the dragon will accept. That is the Royal Selection. Emilia, Priscilla, Crusch, Anastasia and Felt have been competing since Season 1 for the right to stand in front of Volcanica, and none of them, and none of us, had seen it until now.
The casting: why Daisuke Ono
Ono is one of the most recognizable deep voices in anime. His roles include:
- Jotaro Kujo in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, from Stardust Crusaders through Stone Ocean
- Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler, which won him Best Actor at the Seiyu Awards
- Shizuo Heiwajima in Durarara!!
- Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan
- Itsuki Koizumi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Sinbad in Magi, Shintaro Midorima in Kuroko’s Basketball, Battler in Umineko
Casting a voice this heavy for a character who has been talked about for 80 episodes tells you the production wants Volcanica to land as a presence, not a cameo. Erwin and Jotaro are both characters who command a room by speaking quietly. That is the register a legendary dragon needs.

What happened in Episodes 16 and 17
Episode 16, “Natsuki Subaru,” was the one Season 4 had been building toward. Amnesiac Subaru read his own Books of the Dead, including his life in Japan, met the “real” Subaru inside Od Lagna, accepted they are the same person and recombined. The cause of the amnesia was exposed as a clone of Gluttony, Louis Arneb, possessing him. It ended with Emilia realizing his memories were back.
Episode 17, “Good Loser,” was the counterattack. With both sets of memories merged, Subaru split the party against the five threats closing in on the Pleiades Watchtower. Julius, taunted again by Reid Astrea, finally accepted his lost name, reforged his spirit contract and beat Reid. Foxidna talked Anastasia back into her own body. And Emilia climbed to the top floor for the final trial, where the tower’s overseer turned out to be Volcanica. Two episodes remain in the season.

My take: Re:Zero has been writing a check for 80 episodes and this is the first time it has to cash it. Every political thread since Season 1, the whole Royal Selection, the reason Emilia is even in the story, hangs on a dragon we were told about and never shown. Introducing it as the final exam of the tower, with two episodes left and no time to explain anything, is a choice, and I think it is the right one. Nagatsuki’s world runs on the gap between legends and what actually happened 400 years ago. The Witch of Envy was not what the kingdom said. The Sage at the top of the tower turned out to be Shaula, not Flugel. So the Divine Dragon that “keeps the balance” and has “a true nature shrouded in mystery” is not going to be a benevolent guardian, and casting the voice of Jotaro is a signal that the show wants you to feel the weight before it pulls the rug. The problem is pacing. Part 2 has already spent most of its eight episodes on the memory arc, which was the correct call because Episode 16 was the best thing this season did, but it leaves Volcanica, the tower’s fifth threat and the arc’s ending with two episodes to breathe. My prediction: Episode 18 gives Ono maybe three minutes of screen time, the season ends on a reveal rather than a resolution, and Season 5 gets announced in the finale because there is no other way to pay this off.
