The past decade for the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has explored several major anime entries and alternate universes, with all of these featuring their own unique mecha. Now, one of these giant robots is getting a brand-new model kit, with the design derived from one of the more overlooked parts of the brand.
Bandai’s new HG 1/144 G-Self (Atmospheric Pack & Space Pack) (Theatrical Movie ‘Gundam Reconguista in G’ Ver.) is based on the main mecha from 2014’s Gundam Reconguista in G. Meant to be the ultimate depiction of the mobile suit, the High Grade kit comes with two of its notable jetpack accessories. Packed to the brim with accessories and weapons, it’s easily one of the coolest collectibles for the 2010s anime.
The G-Self Mecha Flies High in Bandai’s New Reconguista in G Model Kit
Derived specifically from how the mecha was seen in the Reconguista in G compilation anime movie, the HG 1/144 G-Self (Atmospheric Pack & Space Pack) (Theatrical Movie ‘Gundam Reconguista in G’ Ver.) model kit bears one of the most unique designs in the franchise. Taking the classic RX-78-2 design and running with it, it has a notably alien aesthetic to it, reflecting how the anime it’s from was much different from previous Gundam anime. Accentuating this design are the various backpacks that it uses, two of which are depicted in the model kit. These are the Atmospheric Pack and the Space Pack, which allow the G-Self to fly in the air and in outer space.
Featuring several points of articulation, the model kit can switch between both of its backpacks and easily emulate scenes from the anime. However, these aren’t the only accessories included; the kit also comes with an Amelia and a Towasanga Beam Rifle and shield, two Beam Sabers, a Core Fighter, an action base 7 and several interchangeable hands. Despite being only a High Grade kit, it’s definitely the definitive new take on the mobile suit. Pre-orders are now available on the Premium Bandai website, which lists the Gunpla for 6,050 yen (~US$41) and an expected shipping date of January 2026.
