New Saga Anime Review: A Familiar Time Travel Power Fantasy
New Saga follows a legendary hero who has transcended time to save everyone, and I have to admit the first thing that stuck with me was his name: Kyle. There is something quietly funny about a grand fantasy world singing the praises of its valiant savior, Kyle, and that gentle silliness colored a lot of my viewing.
Underneath the chuckle, though, New Saga is a fairly standard power fantasy adventure. The one idea that sets it apart is how Kyle gains his edge. Rather than stumbling into an overpowered weapon, he is sent back in time just far enough to stop the demonic disaster about to strike his hometown, so his real weapon is knowledge of what is coming.
It is a nice hook, but the execution is where things wobble. Kyle’s foreknowledge often seems to be invented in the moment, which makes the story feel like it is being assembled on the fly rather than planned. The show reaches for worldbuilding and political intrigue too, yet those threads tend to appear and fade without much payoff.
The characters do not do enough to pick up the slack. Kyle and the cast around him, including Sildonia and the assorted girls drawn to him, mostly come across as one note, each defined by a single trait with little depth behind it. A stronger ensemble might have made the shakier writing easier to forgive.
The result is a show that is watchable but rarely memorable, coasting on a premise it does not fully develop.
My take: I really wanted the time travel angle to lead somewhere richer, because the core idea is genuinely good. As it stands, New Saga is comfort food at best, and I would point newcomers toward stronger fantasy first.
