Monogatari Watch Order Explained for Newcomers
Monogatari is the series everyone tells you to watch and nobody can tell you how to watch. The truth is simpler than the internet makes it seem: release order works, with one exception.
Release order (recommended)
Bakemonogatari (15 episodes) is where Shaft’s adaptation of Nisio Isin’s novels began, and it is still the best entry point. Follow it with Nisemonogatari, Nekomonogatari Black, then Monogatari Series Second Season, Hanamonogatari, Tsukimonogatari, Owarimonogatari, Koyomimonogatari, the Kizumonogatari film trilogy, Owarimonogatari Second Season, Zoku Owarimonogatari, and finally the Off and Monster Season adaptation that arrived in 2024. That is roughly 100 episodes plus three films.
The Kizumonogatari question
Kizumonogatari is chronologically first, telling the story of how Araragi became a vampire. Watching it first spoils nothing but flattens the mystery that Bakemonogatari builds around his past. Most longtime fans recommend watching it after Owarimonogatari, where it was released, or at the earliest after Nekomonogatari Black. Do not start with it.
Why it is worth the effort
Monogatari is a dialogue driven supernatural series about a boy who helps girls with their personal demons, literally and otherwise. Shaft’s direction, all head tilts and text cards, is an acquired taste that becomes an addiction. The fanservice is real and so is the writing.
My take: Start with Bakemonogatari, ignore chronological order charts, and save Kizumonogatari as the reward. It is the best thing in the series and it hits hardest late.
