Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Reveals Maru’s True Mission
Gege Akutami has opened a new corner of the Jujutsu Kaisen world with a spin off called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. Running in Shueisha’s Jump GIGA, the series brings aliens into the franchise’s supernatural setting and follows three leads, among them a visitor named Maru.
The third chapter finally spelled out what Maru is doing here. He admitted to his human companions that his mission is to study human society and judge whether peaceful coexistence between species is possible, a verdict that could shape future relations between humanity and his people.
That confession came during a mission to capture a dangerous shark creature, and it marked a turning point with his teammates. Maru also explained why he holds back his powers. His cursed technique is tied to that of his twin brother Cross, so using it would alert Cross to what he is doing. Maru worries that would sour his brother’s view of humanity, and he wants people judged on their own merits.
The setup hints at conflict to come, since the twins may end up seeing humanity very differently. For now, the series leans into themes of understanding and coexistence that reach beyond its supernatural trappings.
For readers wondering, Modulo is canon, overseen directly by Akutami and built to expand the lore rather than rewrite it. New chapters arrive on a roughly quarterly basis in Jump GIGA, and there has been no word yet on whether main series characters will appear.
My take: Dropping aliens into Jujutsu Kaisen could have felt random, but tying Maru’s powers to his brother gives it a real emotional hook. I am curious to see how far Akutami pushes this quieter, more thoughtful story.
