Japan’s Most Censored TV Anime By High School DxD Studio Gets New Release for U.S. Fans
A televised anime series that was considered to be risqué enough to be broadcast in Japan with no visuals is now promising to bring its notoriety to a new audience with its upcoming English dub. The anime in question, Nukitashi, is animated by Studio Passione, known for its work on fan service-heavy titles like High School DxD and Interspecies Reviewers.
Nukitashi, which began its Japanese broadcast on July 18, became infamous for its extreme approach to censorship. Its broadcast on the free-to-air channel Tokyo MX-1 was presented in a completely “audio-only” format, stripping away all visuals and replacing them with a single, static placeholder image of a bird against a beach backdrop. This unconventional airing method, which included only the dialogue, music and sound effects, effectively transformed the television anime into a radio drama for audiences. Following this unprecedented release, it has now been confirmed that Nukitashi is making its way to English-speaking audiences on streaming.
High School DxD Studio’s New Anime Gets English Dub Despite Home Country Censorship
WWWave Corporation’s new anime streaming platform, OceanVeil, is producing an English dub of Nukitashi. The English dub is a collaborative effort between OceanVeil, Kadokawa and Ascendent Animation, with the latter company based in New York. Currently, OceanVevil’s English subbed Nukitashi release is available to stream only in North America. While the announcement has been made, further details regarding the cast, crew and release date for the English dub will be revealed at a later time. Both OceanVeil and its WWWave-owned sister service, Coolmic, are known for carrying uncensored anime and fan service-heavy content.
Nukitashi anime’s audio-only broadcast, which fans speculated was a marketing tactic, is just one of the several versions available in Japan. A fully regulated version with some censored visuals aired on networks like BS11 and Tokyo MX’s sister channel, Tokyo MX-2. Meanwhile, the premium channel AT-X aired the Seiran Island Version, advertised as the largely uncensored edition, which will also be available on the Blu-ray release. OceanVeil is currently streaming the Seiran Island version and the fully regulated version of Nukitashi in Japanese with English subs.
Nukitashi, based on a 2018 adult PC game (eroge) of the same name by Qruppo, is set on the fictional Seiran Island, where a draconian law has been enacted, in which public sexual acts among the populace are promoted and normalized. The story follows protagonist Junnosuke Tachibana, who arrives on the island with the firm goal of abolishing this law — a task made difficult, as he is constantly pursued by the local girls. The source material from Qruppo was first launched in 2018 and quickly gained popularity, winning Best Scenario and Best New Brand at the 2018 Moe Game Awards.
The anime adaptation is directed by Nobuyoshi Nagayama (Vampire Dormitory, Love Flops) with Kenta Ihara (Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-, Uncle From Another World) in charge of series composition. The original game’s scenario writers Naoto Kurahone and Yu Kamichika of Qruppo supervised the script. Kumata handled the character designs for the anime, while the music is composed by Ebi Curry Earl, Sasa Ikeki, Umigame and Kashiko. Yuki Yumeno performed the opening theme “Utopia or Dystopia,” while the ending theme song, “Saikai-kei Joshi wa Dosurya Iidesu ka?” was performed by Rie Ayase.
Game publisher Shiravune released the Nukitashi game on Steam and Johren in June 2023, with a sequel, Nukitashi 2, releasing in February 2024. A manga adaptation by Mameojitan also began serialization in 2020 and later moved to Shueisha’s Ultra Jump magazine in 2021.
