Inuyasha Is Ready to Reclaim Its Anime Throne With a Remake
As anime’s popularity continues to soar with each passing year, some of the medium’s most iconic titles and characters are being brought back to life and introduced to an all-new generation of fans in remasters and remakes. One artist’s work, which has now been revisited twice in new anime productions, is the legendary Rumiko Takahashi.
Takahashi’s multiple manga hits have become some of the most important and recognizable in the industry, and in just the last 3 years, both Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 have been entirely remade by prominent animation studios.
Arguably her most iconic work, Inuyasha, may be next in line, and would have the potential to reclaim the throne it once inhabited during the 2000s and very early 2010s.
Now Is the Best Time For an Inuyasha Remake
The Powerhouse Series Has What it Takes to Once Again Become One of Anime’s Biggest Titles
Inuyasha, during the peak of its popularity, was one of anime’s biggest headliners. Far ahead of its time, technically fitting into an isekai genre that only rose to immense popularity about a decade later, Inuyasha blended fantasy, adventure, and romance into a full package that dominated the anime scene.
However, 25 years on from the anime’s debut, Inuyasha doesn’t exactly have the hold on the global anime community it once did. Anime is experiencing an ongoing meteoric rise, and there’s an entire generation of new fans entirely unaware of Inuyasha and the rest of Rumiko Takahashi’s works.
That is quickly changing thanks to the recent releases of 2022’s Urusei Yatsura and 2024’s Ranma 1/2, of which the latter has become quite popular, recently landing in Netflix’s top 10 Non-English titles with its season two premiere. Though Inuyasha isn’t as old as either of those titles, anime has come a long way in just the decade and a half since the series’ end.
There’s a great chance that a new generation of fans might set their eyes on an Inuyasha remake, featuring top-notch visuals, voice acting, and pacing, and be entirely won over, just as fans were over two decades ago.
Inuyasha Isn’t Too New for a Modern Revisit
Anime Remakes Are Delivering Classics to a New Audience
Fans of Inuyasha, who grew up with the series and hold it near and dear, likely won’t be too thrilled with the idea of a remake, but it isn’t as though one would be entirely pointless. Beyond updating the series’ visuals, which could be done with a simple remaster, a remake would offer a chance for the series to be entirely faithful to its source material.
Like the original Ranma 1/2 anime series, Inuyasha touched on the major developments, but also littered its initial run with a healthy amount of filler content. Later, during Inuyasha: The Final Act, hundreds of manga chapters were condensed into one singular anime season.
An Inuyasha remake would allow newer fans to connect with a series that deserves to be celebrated and enjoyed even today, while also delivering a faithful adaptation to longtime fans of the series. Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2 have both been successfully remade, and Inuyasha should be next in line.
