Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment Trailer Previews Gameplay

Nintendo started streaming a new trailer on Friday called “Unite Against the Demon King” for Koei Tecmo’s Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. The game is the newest entry in the Hyrule Warriors series and a spinoff of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and it launches on November 6 for the Nintendo Switch 2.

The trailer walks through the story, the gameplay, and the cast, which includes Zelda, Rauru, Mineru, and fighters drawn from several tribes. The plot sits before the events of Tears of the Kingdom and follows the Imprisoning War along with Zelda’s part in it. On the gameplay side, the game brings in Zonai Devices, Sync Strikes that pair characters together, two player split screen co op, and a GameShare option that lets a second person join without owning a copy.

This is not the first time the series has filled in Hyrule history. Nintendo and Koei Tecmo released Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity in November 2020 as a prequel to Breath of the Wild set a full century earlier. The franchise itself goes back further, with the original Hyrule Warriors arriving on Wii U in Japan in August 2014 and in the West that September.

The spinoffs kept coming after that. Hyrule Warriors Legends reached Japan in January 2016 and North America and Europe in March 2016, while Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition landed on Switch in Japan in March 2018 and in the West in May 2018.

As for the mainline games, Breath of the Wild launched on Switch and Wii U in March 2017, and Tears of the Kingdom followed on Switch in May 2023 after a delay from 2022 to give the team more time. Nintendo later released The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom in September 2024, the first mainline title to put Zelda in the lead instead of Link, with a top down look close to the Link’s Awakening remake from September 2019.

My take: I really enjoy how these Warriors spinoffs let me spend time with corners of Hyrule the main games only hint at, and putting Zelda front and center feels like a welcome change.
