Firefly Wedding Premieres Today on Crunchyroll
The fall season’s most talked about romance arrives tonight. Firefly Wedding premieres October 9 on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block and streams on Crunchyroll, with David Production handling the animation and a full set of dubs, including English, available from launch.
A marriage proposal at knifepoint
Satoko Kirigaya has everything a noblewoman could want except time. Dying, and determined to marry well before she goes, she finds her chance when an assassin named Shinpei Goto kidnaps her. Her offer is simple: marry me and we both get what we want. He accepts, and the arrangement curdles into an obsession that neither of them can control. Oreco Tachibana’s manga has been one of the most discussed shojo titles of recent years because it treats love as something dangerous rather than sweet.
David Production’s involvement raised eyebrows when it was announced, but the studio’s JoJo pedigree turns out to be a strength: Firefly Wedding needs a team comfortable with sudden violence inside elegant frames, and the trailers have delivered exactly that. The opening theme, Period, was written for the show by iri.
Why Noitamina matters
The block has a long history of adult skewing hits, and a Noitamina slot is a statement of intent. The premiere was confirmed in the fall lineup reported by Animation World Network.
My take: This is the premiere I circled back in September. If tonight’s episode keeps the manga’s nerve, Firefly Wedding is the show people argue about all season.
