Duolingo Releases First Trailer For Upcoming Anime
In a surprise move that almost no one expected, Duolingo has announced the upcoming release of its own anime. It is dubbed entirely in Japanese and likely draws influence from the hit series Squid Game. This is an extremely ambitious move on the part of the app, and has been met with relatively mixed reviews. While many are impressed with the detail and care that has been seemingly put into the series, it comes after Duolingo’s latest and greatest controversy.
Duolingo has since doubled back on their statements made regarding AI-generated content, but they made several controversial claims that negatively hurt their business. Since then, the company has been doing its best to recover from their significant loss, seemingly desperate to reobtain their original audience. While Duolingo was once considered the peak language learning app, their AI controversy set them back an astronomical degree.
In fact, Duolingo’s willingness to consult AI has led many to assume that it is being used on their anime project. Although this is somewhat unlikely and hasn’t been confirmed in any way, it wouldn’t be the first time a company foolishly doubled down on a poor decision. Either way, many are still trying to determine who this anime is intended for.
An educational Japanese series for anime fans definitely sounds great in theory, but fans remain uncertain about the execution. Although the first episode is quickly approaching, many fans aren’t completely certain the show will actually be educational. From the trailer alone, it appears the show will have a heavy focus on entertainment, which is great. However, many fans obviously expect more from what used to be considered the quintessential language learning app.
Ultimately, if the anime is well executed, it could be one of the biggest wins Duolingo has had in a while. On the other hand, if the anime doesn’t perform well, it could land the studio in even further trouble. Either way, all eyes are on this surprising and unexpected project. Hopefully, this will bring the project that brings the studio back from the brink of social collapse.
