Daily Lives of High School Boys Creator Starts a New Manga

Yasunobu Yamauchi, the creator behind the beloved comedy Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, or The Daily Lives of High School Boys, has started a new series. Titled Joshi Koukousei no Nichijou, which translates to Daily Lives of High School Girls, it began on the Gangan Online web magazine on October 18.

The new title is a clear companion to his earlier hit. Yamauchi first introduced The Daily Lives of High School Boys as a one shot in 2008 before serializing it on Gangan Online from 2009 to 2012, with Square Enix collecting it into seven volumes.

That series struck a real chord, building up a cumulative 2.3 million copies in circulation thanks to its affectionate, absurd take on everyday teenage life.

It also reached the screen, with Sunrise turning it into a twelve episode anime in early 2012. The show made its way to North America through NIS America on home video, and later streamed in the United States on Hulu and then Funimation.

My take: The original is one of the funniest slice of life comedies around, so a girls’ side companion is genuinely exciting. I would love to see that same warm, silly humor turned on a new cast.
