‘Chainsaw Man – The Movie’ Dominates the Best Anime Film of the Year at Japanese Box Office
It’s only been a few days since Chainsaw Man – The Movie debuted in Japan, and it has gotten quite the attention, even more than the best anime film of 2025, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle. Released in Japanese theaters on September 19, 2025, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc instantly overthrew Demon Slayer to claim the number one spot at the opening weekend box office, grossing 1.251 billion yen ($8.46 million) on 807,000 admissions over the three-day weekend.
These numbers have increased significantly in its second weekend, as recent reports confirm that the new Chainsaw Man movie drew in 523,000 more people, adding up to 799.7 million yen, approximately $5.41 million. With that, in its first 10 days of release, the intense anime sequel, still in the top spot at the Japanese box office, has amassed an impressive cumulative of 2.98 billion yen ($20.16 million) earned from 1.96 million ticket sales.
As of this writing, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc has become the fifth top-grossing Japanese anime film of 2025, surpassing Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle and Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Cho Karei! Shakunetsu no Kasukabe Dancers. Next month, fans in the US will get to enjoy the masterpiece in theaters as it is set to be released by Crunchyroll through Sony Pictures Releasing on October 24, 2025. The movie is directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara and produced by MAPPA, serving as a direct sequel to Season 1 of the anime series.
‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Still Reigns at The Top
As for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, after reigning at number one for nine consecutive weeks since its release, it moved to second place upon Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc’s premiere, in its 10th weekend. It drew in 390,000 viewers and grossed 645 million yen ($4.36 million) over the three-day weekend, losing its first-place spot for the first time since its release on July 18, 2025.
Later in its 11th weekend, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle earned 447 million yen, roughly $3.02 million, on 271,000 admissions, maintaining its second-place position from the previous weekend. The film’s cumulative domestic gross has now reached 35,064,331,400 yen (approximately $237 million) on 24,266,753 admissions in 73 days since its release. All in all, the magnificent dark fantasy remains among the top films of the year, as fans eagerlyanticipate its imminent sequels.
