Chainsaw Man Stays Number One as Demon Slayer Holds Second
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc held onto first place at the Japanese box office, with the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle film sitting right behind it at number two.
Over the weekend, the Reze Arc sold about 577,000 tickets and earned roughly 897 million yen, around 5.88 million US dollars. That brought its running total to about 2.88 million tickets and 4.37 billion yen, or close to 28.7 million dollars.
The film first reached number one by overtaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which had dominated the chart for nine straight weeks before stepping aside.
Chainsaw Man opened strong from the very start, selling more than 272,000 tickets on its first day alone across hundreds of theaters in Japan.
With two of the year’s biggest anime films holding the top two spots, it is clear the medium continues to command a huge share of Japanese cinemas.
My take: Two anime juggernauts trading the top spots is a wonderful problem for fans to have. Reze Arc dethroning a film that ruled for nine weeks really shows how much anticipation there was for it.
