Blue Lock Doubles Down With Season 3 & Live-Action Movie
Despite a poor reception to season 2, Blue Lock’s anime is set to come back for season 3. The news comes nine months after the finale of its controversial 2024 outing, with plans to bring the anime into its Neo Egoist League Arc. The development is unsurprising, especially after the Michael Kaiser tease in the season 2 finale.
Blue Lock’s season 3 return was confirmed at the Blue Lock Egoist Festa 2025 event in Tokyo on September 28. The event confirmed an additional project, with a live-action adaptation of the manga on the way. Fans have a right to be both excited and nervous for season 3, though.
Blue Lock Anime Season 3 Will Adapt Neo Egoist League Arc
Despite the infamously poor reception to Blue Lock season 2’s animation, enough fans are sticking around to see the anime through its new chapter. The Neo Egoist League is the longest arc by a massive margin, with 151 chapters so far. Unless it cranks up season 1’s pacing, there’s plenty of material to carry the anime into more subsequent seasons.
The Neo Egoist League Arc will bring Blue Lock’s characters into the next phase of training for the U-20 World Cup. Its players will integrate with international teams from across Europe including Bastard München, Manshine City, and more, to find its top prospects. Speaking at season 3’s announcement is Blue Lock writer Muneyuki Kaneshiro, stating:
“With the sequel confirmed, we did it! Thank you to the incredible Egoist production team! This marks a new beginning for Isagi and for us as well! We will pour everything into it, with full ego, swirling eyes, and tongues hanging out, so kneel and wait for us!”
-Muneyuki Kaneshiro, Blue Lock Writer
Blue Lock season 3 will bring viewers into a thrilling new era where its stars will undergo significant growth. New fan-favorites also take the spotlight, with German prodigy forward Michael Kaiser gaining extra exposure that quickly catapulted him to the top spots on popularity charts. It’s mostly a question of whether the anime can work past season 2’s fatal flaws.
Blue Lock Season 2’s Bad Animation Makes Fans Nervous
While some anime have had disappointing sophomore outings, like One-Punch Man or Tower of God, but Blue Lock season 2 garnered a uniquely poor reception. It had frequent “slideshow” animation, lingering on freeze-frame shots, pulling most viewers out of the experience, placing it among 2024’s worst anime returns. It’s not unlike the recent controversy of The Beginning After the End.
Much like TBATE, Blue Lock’s announcement triggers a mixed reception; excitement about the stories about to be adapted, with its series being a cautionary tale against overworking production staff and taking on too many projects. It’s fair to be nervous, and no drastic changes have been advertised, such as any studio changes. However, the announcements didn’t stop there.
Blue Lock Is Getting a Live-Action Movie
With season 3 on the way, Blue Lock was also confirmed to be getting a live-action movie with CREDEUS attached for a Summer 2026 release. The company has helmed projects including live-action adaptations of Golden Kamuy, Kingdom, and now, the recently confirmed Sakamoto Days. With no shortage of bombastic elements in their current resume, they can easily handle Blue Lock.
“Blue Lock” is being made into a live-action movie! We are having exciting daily meetings with the production staff, who are even more passionate and egoistic than us, and who are also meticulous. Please look forward to seeing what the chemical reaction between “Blue Lock” and live-action will produce!!
-Yusuke Nomura, Blue Lock Artist
A live-action Blue Lock movie could also be a treat for those just getting into the series. It’s an absurd spectacle with next to no realism, which appeals to hardcore fans along for the ride and casuals alike. A live-action adaptation, at its worst, would be hard-pressed to do worse than season 2 with traditional animation out of the equation.
