Battle Arena Toshinden Games Getting Modern Ports for 30th Anniversary
Publisher Edia has announced it will port the Battle Arena Toshinden series to modern platforms as part of a licensing deal marking the franchise’s 30th anniversary. All three original games are planned for release across 2026 and 2027.
Tamsoft and Tomy originally released Battle Arena Toshinden as one of the earliest 3D fighting games on the original PlayStation in 1995. Battle Arena Toshinden 2 followed later that year and Toshinden 3 launched in 1996. The trilogy helped define what 3D fighting games could look like in that era and served as a system seller for the PlayStation in multiple markets.
The games also inspired a 1996 anime adaptation released in North America by Central Park Media with an English dub. The series has been largely dormant for decades, making this announcement a welcome surprise for fans of early PlayStation era fighting games.
My take: Toshinden is one of those franchises that feels perfectly preserved in amber from 1995. The character designs, the attitude, the early 3D fighting style all carry real nostalgia. Bringing the original three games to current platforms for the 30th anniversary is the right call and there is genuine excitement waiting for this in fighting game communities that grew up on the PlayStation.
